Mother's Day special. 10 Things I learned from my mother

As far as I am concerned, everyday is mother's day. Mother's don't get a day off from being a mum, they are always on call: all day everyday. With the amount my mother influences my daily life, from what I wear to how I parent, I would be completely clueless without her.  Here are 10 things I have learned from my mother.

1. Read: Although not much of a reader herself,  she filled our rooms with books and bookshelves since I can remember. She continued to shove books in front of me until it became a habit. And now, I can keep myself entertained for days because of her persistence.

2. Keep your room, your house and your workspace clean. The obsession of having a clean room has not only helped me to use cleaning to destress but to also keep myself organized.

3. Wear clothes that look good on you, not what is trendy. Always be presentable. A well groomed person is easy on the eyes for everyone and gives off a positive vibe.

4. Be nice to everyone: don't treat people differently based on how they are dressed or their social status.

5. Family and health are important. You can work all day everyday but if you don't have good health or a family you are close to, you are going to be sad and lonely anyway.

6. Working hard is the only option if you want to do well. Complaining is not going to get us anywhere.

7. Be independent. Don't rely on anyone for your finances or your happiness.

8. Hydrate. Water will help with skin, sleep, metabolism and health.

9. Surround yourself with good friends. Friends that are genuine well wishers and will be a good influence on you.

10.  Enjoy Life. You live only once so you might as well live well. Live in a nice house, wear nice jewelry, wear nice clothes, enjoy what you do, and surround yourself with people who make you happy.

The Legend: Anna Wintour

I finally finished reading Amy Odell's  biography on Anna Wintour and saying that I am impressed is an understatement. I am in complete and absolute awe of this woman.  Much of how Anna turned out is a result of her family and upbringing. As daughter of Charles Wintour, who was a legend in his field, Anna had the epitome of hard work and serious work ethics in her face at a very young age. Her father who was in office by 8 am every morning was responsible for putting out five different editions of the paper a day. "There wasn't any sense that he was an absent father, on the other side, he taught all of us what a work ethic is, and how important it is to love what you do in life." I think this set the tone for her life as she herself would also try to be in office by 8 am and often stay until 8 pm. Growing up, she was very much a part of her parents' lives. The glamorous parties and intellectual milieu was normalized growing up, and contributed to who she is toda...
