The Maidens: Another book review

Hi guys! Madame Meri is back with another book review and that too within a couple of days from my last one, because I was able to go through The Maidens like a snap of a finger. I don't usually write book reviews so I may be spoiling this murder mystery thriller for some who have not read this book yet. So in case you are indeed planning to read this book, please stop reading now.

The Maidens blew my mind. For someone who is not good with thrillers (movies or books), I was tempted to google the plot within 10 minutes of starting this book. I had read The Silent Patient from the same author last year so I was expecting some kind of a plot twist and hence viewed every character as a murder suspect.

Almost every man in this book gave me the creeps. Like a typical Alex Michaelids novel, this book is filled with mental health references, and anyone could have been sick enough to be a serial killer. From the beginning, the main character, Mariana, begins with a murder suspect: Professor Edward Fosca, and throughout the book I was waiting to see how she can prove that this cocky professor is guilty. But because I was expecting a plot twist, I kept an open mind. I thought, it could be anyone; I had doubts on Fred who was a bit too keen to help, or even Morris. But, eventually when the story unfolded, I was quite shocked, and a tad bit disappointed.

In the end, I laughed to myself. I suspected almost every man, but never a woman! So the shock was very much there. However, the way the story ended felt a bit disconnected. May be if this was the author's first book, I would judge the surprising turn of events differently. But I felt like he was trying to make this shocking plot twist a signature style of his, and forced a different ending just for the sake of it. Regardless, the way this book was written got me hooked; so, I will still give this book a 4.5* rating.

The Legend: Anna Wintour

I finally finished reading Amy Odell's  biography on Anna Wintour and saying that I am impressed is an understatement. I am in complete and absolute awe of this woman.  Much of how Anna turned out is a result of her family and upbringing. As daughter of Charles Wintour, who was a legend in his field, Anna had the epitome of hard work and serious work ethics in her face at a very young age. Her father who was in office by 8 am every morning was responsible for putting out five different editions of the paper a day. "There wasn't any sense that he was an absent father, on the other side, he taught all of us what a work ethic is, and how important it is to love what you do in life." I think this set the tone for her life as she herself would also try to be in office by 8 am and often stay until 8 pm. Growing up, she was very much a part of her parents' lives. The glamorous parties and intellectual milieu was normalized growing up, and contributed to who she is toda...
